Does Genesis Require Premium Gas? Fuel and Octane Guide
Does a Genesis require premium gas? The answer depends on the model, engine, and instructions in its owner’s manual. Some Genesis vehicles recommend 91-octane premium gasoline for optimal performance, while others are designed to operate on 87-octane regular gasoline but may perform better with premium.

That distinction matters. “Recommended” does not always mean “required,” and using a higher octane than your vehicle calls for does not automatically improve fuel economy, clean the engine, or reduce ownership costs.

Below, the Delray Genesis team explains how octane works, why turbocharged Genesis engines may benefit from premium fuel, and how to identify the correct gasoline for your vehicle.

Does Every Genesis Need Premium Gas?

No. Premium gasoline is not universally required across every gasoline-powered Genesis vehicle.

The correct fuel depends on the specific model year and powertrain. Some Genesis owner’s manuals recommend premium gasoline with an Anti-Knock Index of 91 or higher for optimal performance. Other Genesis models permit gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher while recommending premium for improved performance.

Owner’s Manual Wording What It Means
Premium required Use the stated premium octane rating whenever you refuel.
Premium recommended The engine may operate on the permitted lower octane, but premium is recommended for its intended performance.
87 octane or higher Regular gasoline meets the minimum requirement unless the manual provides additional instructions.

The safest approach is to follow the owner’s manual for your exact vehicle rather than applying one rule to the entire Genesis lineup.

Genesis G70 and GV80 Fuel Recommendations

Genesis fuel guidance can differ even between current gasoline-powered models.

Genesis G70: Genesis recommends unleaded gasoline rated at 91 octane or higher for optimal performance. The owner’s manual warns that using fuel below 91 octane may result in reduced engine power and increased fuel consumption.

Genesis GV80: The GV80 is designed to operate on unleaded gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher. However, Genesis recommends 91-octane premium gasoline for improved vehicle performance.

Do not assume that every Genesis sedan and SUV has the same minimum fuel requirement. Check the manual for your model year, engine, and configuration.

What Does the Octane Rating Mean?

The octane rating measures gasoline’s resistance to premature combustion, commonly called engine knock or detonation.

Inside a gasoline engine, the air-fuel mixture should ignite at a controlled time. Higher-octane fuel is more resistant to igniting prematurely under heat and pressure. This can be especially relevant in turbocharged engines, which force additional air into the combustion chamber to produce more power.

At gas stations in the United States, you will commonly see:

  • Regular: Usually 87 octane
  • Midgrade: Commonly 89 octane
  • Premium: Usually 91 to 93 octane

A higher octane rating does not mean the gasoline contains more energy. It means the fuel has greater resistance to knock.

Why Does Genesis Recommend Premium Gas?

Many Genesis vehicles use turbocharged engines engineered to deliver strong power from relatively compact displacement. Premium fuel can help the engine operate using the ignition timing and boost levels for which it was calibrated.

Maintain Intended Performance

When premium gasoline is recommended, using it can help the engine deliver its intended acceleration, responsiveness, and power output.

If lower-octane gasoline is permitted, the engine-control system may adjust ignition timing or other operating parameters to reduce the possibility of knock. The vehicle can continue operating, but performance may be reduced.

Support Consistent Operation Under Load

Higher-octane fuel can be particularly useful when the engine is working harder, such as during rapid acceleration, sustained highway driving, hot weather, steep climbs, or towing with a properly equipped vehicle.

Match the Published Vehicle Calibration

Published horsepower, torque, acceleration, and fuel-economy figures may be determined using the manufacturer’s recommended fuel. Using a lower octane can prevent the engine from consistently reproducing those results.

Does Premium Gas Improve Fuel Economy?

Not necessarily.

If your Genesis recommends premium gasoline, lower-octane fuel may cause the engine to adjust its operation, potentially reducing efficiency along with performance. In that situation, premium may help the vehicle operate as designed.

However, premium gasoline does not guarantee enough of an MPG improvement to offset its higher price. Results depend on the engine, driving habits, traffic, speed, temperature, tire pressure, and many other variables.

If your vehicle is designed for regular gasoline and does not recommend premium, purchasing a higher octane may provide little or no measurable benefit.

Premium fuel should be viewed as a vehicle specification, not as a guaranteed money-saving upgrade.

Does Premium Gas Make an Engine Last Longer?

There is no general rule that premium gasoline automatically extends engine life.

The important factor is using gasoline that meets the octane and quality requirements stated by Genesis. Fuel with insufficient octane may reduce performance in a vehicle designed for premium, but purchasing a higher octane than the vehicle requires does not automatically provide additional protection.

Engine longevity depends on many factors, including:

  • Following the scheduled maintenance plan
  • Using the specified engine oil
  • Maintaining the cooling and ignition systems
  • Addressing warning lights and drivability problems promptly
  • Using suitable, high-quality gasoline
  • Avoiding unapproved fuel additives

Regular maintenance matters more than selecting the most expensive grade at the pump without checking the vehicle requirements.

Is Premium Gas Cleaner Than Regular Gas?

Octane and detergent quality are separate characteristics.

Premium gasoline is not automatically cleaner simply because it has a higher octane rating. Fuel detergent standards depend on the gasoline brand and formulation rather than whether the pump is labeled regular or premium.

Genesis recommends using high-quality gasoline treated with detergent additives, such as fuel meeting TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline standards. These detergents help limit deposits and support the engine and emissions-control system.

  • Octane rating describes resistance to engine knock.
  • Detergent quality relates to deposit-control additives.
  • Fuel freshness and condition can also affect vehicle operation.

A high-quality 87-octane gasoline may contain effective detergents, while a premium label alone does not provide all the information needed to judge fuel quality.

What Happens If You Put Regular Gas in a Genesis?

First, determine whether regular gasoline meets the minimum octane requirement for your specific Genesis.

If the owner’s manual allows 87 octane but recommends premium, accidentally or occasionally using regular gasoline should not be treated the same as using prohibited fuel. However, you may notice:

  • Reduced engine power
  • Less immediate throttle response
  • Possible increases in fuel consumption
  • Different performance during hard acceleration or heavy loads

If your manual specifically requires premium gasoline, follow that instruction. Contact an authorized Genesis retailer if you have filled the vehicle with fuel below the minimum required rating and are unsure what to do.

Do not attempt to correct the situation by pouring an unapproved octane booster or cleaning additive into the fuel tank.

Can You Mix Regular and Premium Gas?

Mixing two gasoline grades results in an approximate octane rating between the two. For example, adding premium gasoline to a tank that already contains regular fuel will raise the overall octane level, but it may not produce a precise or predictable final rating.

This should not replace following the fuel recommendation in your owner’s manual. When the tank is low, refuel using the correct gasoline grade for your vehicle.

If the engine runs roughly, produces unusual sounds, displays a warning light, or behaves abnormally after refueling, reduce heavy acceleration and contact a Genesis retailer for guidance.

Can a Genesis Use E15 or E85?

Fuel compatibility must also account for ethanol content, not only octane.

Genesis manuals generally warn against gasoline containing more than 15% ethanol and against gasoline blended with methanol. E85 is intended for specially designed flex-fuel vehicles and should not be used in a Genesis unless the vehicle documentation explicitly identifies it as compatible.

  • Do not use leaded gasoline.
  • Do not use E85 in a Genesis that is not designated as a flex-fuel vehicle.
  • Do not use gasoline containing methanol.
  • Do not exceed the ethanol limit stated in the owner’s manual.
  • Do not add unapproved metallic or fuel-system additives.

Damage or drivability problems caused by unsuitable fuel may not be covered by the vehicle warranty.

How to Find the Correct Fuel for Your Genesis

Use these sources in order:

  1. Check the owner’s manual. Review the Fuel Requirements section for the exact model year and engine.
  2. Inspect the fuel-filler area. A label may identify the minimum or recommended octane.
  3. Review your vehicle information. Confirm the engine and trim rather than relying only on the model name.
  4. Ask an authorized Genesis retailer. Provide the vehicle identification number if you need confirmation.

Online articles and general advice can be useful, but the owner’s manual for your exact vehicle should control the final decision.

Genesis Premium Gas FAQ

Is 93 octane better than 91 for a Genesis?

If the vehicle recommends 91 octane or higher, 93 octane generally meets that recommendation. However, it may not produce a noticeable improvement compared with 91 unless the engine calibration or driving conditions can benefit from the additional knock resistance.

Will using regular gas void the warranty?

Using a fuel grade permitted by the owner’s manual should not be treated as improper fuel use. Damage caused by unsuitable or prohibited fuel may not be covered. Consult the applicable warranty materials for complete terms.

Do Genesis electric vehicles need premium gas?

No. Fully electric models such as the Genesis GV60 and Electrified GV70 do not use gasoline. They recharge their high-voltage batteries using compatible home or public charging equipment.

Should I use an octane booster?

Do not add an aftermarket octane booster or fuel-system treatment unless it is specifically approved for your vehicle. Genesis warns against unapproved fuel additives that may affect the engine, catalyst, fuel system, or emissions equipment.

The Bottom Line: Follow Your Genesis Owner’s Manual

Premium gasoline can help a Genesis engine provide the performance for which it was designed, but the exact recommendation varies by vehicle.

  • Do not assume every Genesis requires premium gasoline.
  • Use at least the minimum octane stated in your owner’s manual.
  • Use premium when the manual requires it.
  • Consider premium when Genesis recommends it for optimal performance.
  • Do not expect higher octane alone to guarantee better MPG or longer engine life.
  • Choose high-quality detergent gasoline and avoid prohibited fuel blends.

When in doubt, verify the requirements for your exact model year and engine before refueling.
